Domin Nakloke | Unlocking Love Manual Successes

By Brandy Roberts | Portfolio Manager

Youth Discussions in Dili: Changing Perspectives
Youth Discussions in Dili: Changing Perspectives

The development of the Domin Nakloke Discussion Manual has helped to support an open dialogue and encouraged young people to talk about violence prevention, healthy relationships and pregnancy prevention. This manual accompanies the Domin Nakloke film series and provides guidance on holding discussions around each of the 4 episodes of the film series. As part of the development of the manual, a stakeholder meeting was held, where stakeholders watched the films, identified key messages for each film, discussed whether these messages had an impact on peoples lives, and discussed what information should be added to the manual. After discussion manuals were completed, a brief stakeholders training of trainers took place and participants were encouraged to implement the films and discussion manuals in their related programs. One youth organization that was a part of the stakeholder meeting has already started implementing the program in their communities. They have shown the films and held discussions with over 60 youth.

The discussion manual has become an integral part of the separate project with STARS Grand Challenges Canada, where 12 youth ChangeMakers have been trained in using the manual for discussions. Within the month of December, 12 discussion groups were held and reached 159 youth (58 Female, 101 Male) between the ages of 17 and 24. These discussions were held throughout Dili, as well as in Bobonaro. This program will continue from January – April 2020. These 12 ChangeMakers will use the discussion manual to reach another 800 youth. This program will test the effectiveness of a participant viewing the films versus a participant viewing the films and taking part in a discussion. This will help with planning future interventions as we will better understand the additional value added of having a discussion around a film.
