Standing Strong in Afghanistan
Despite increasing restrictions on women in Afghanistan, Ascend remains a vital and sought-after safe space for women to connect, learn, and grow. Through Ascend, participants continue to develop as leaders, role models, and community service advocates, sharing knowledge on topics like nutrition, mental health, and environmental stewardship.
This quarter, an additional 50 women graduated from Ascend’s four-month program, bringing the total number of alumnae to 130 within a year. These participants have shown notable improvements in self-esteem and mental health upon completing the program. They report a renewed sense of purpose, equipped with the knowledge and skills to inspire and empower others. Families of participants are overwhelmingly supportive, observing positive changes in their daughters' mental well-being.
“I see a lot of changes in myself. I had poor communication, but now I feel more social. I feel better psychologically and can control my anger. I feel relaxed, and my family also feels these changes.” — Ascend Afghanistan Summer 2024 Participant
Most alumnae remain actively engaged with Ascend, participating in mentoring programs, online lessons, community service projects, and enhancing their English language skills.
Climbing to New Heights in Pakistan
In Pakistan, our instructors have wrapped up an impactful quarter and year. In October, the first cohort of 30 after-school participants celebrated their accomplishments with a graduation ceremony and an overnight camping trip—a first-time experience for many of the participants.
Moreover, the Ascend instructors achieved international certification as Single Pitch Instructors (SPI) in rock climbing, enabling them to safely introduce participants and community members to climbing. These outdoor experiences empower participants, allowing them to overcome fears, build teamwork and trust, practice self-care, and broaden their perspectives on what’s possible.
In partnership with a local NGO, Ascend Pakistan organized the first week-long "Leadership through Mountaineering" camp, welcoming 30 girls from across Gilgit-Baltistan. Ascend’s outreach efforts in the region have also brought fitness, yoga, leadership, teambuilding, and rock climbing workshops to hundreds more women and girls.
“When I finally got the opportunity, I felt I wouldn’t be able to [rock climb]. However, my instructor, Miss Kaneez, boosted my confidence and explained how I could succeed. This helped me trust myself, and I was able to accomplish it. Watching the video now, I feel proud of myself and have shared it with my entire family.” — Ascend Pakistan 2024 Participant
