Resilient and Rising: Women Leading Change in Afghanistan
Despite increasing restrictions on women in Afghanistan, Ascend remains a vital and sought-after safe space where women can connect, learn, and grow. Through our programs, participants develop as leaders, role models, and community service advocates, sharing knowledge on essential topics such as nutrition, mental health, and environmental stewardship.
In 2024, nearly 140 women completed Ascend’s core program, which focuses on mental and physical health, life skills, and community service. These inspiring women reached over 900 community members through initiatives like first aid training, feminine health education, and environmental stewardship—strengthening their leadership skills while serving as role models for others. Our alumnae network continues to grow, now surpassing 170 women. Graduates gain access to ongoing education, mentorship, and community service opportunities, and in 2025, we are launching an entrepreneurship program to further support their aspirations.
Ascend has partnered with the University of Central Asia to offer an entrepreneurship course for Ascend graduates and other women in the community. The first 40-hour cohort began in January 2025, and we are excited to see their business plans take shape and their ambitions turn into reality.
Breaking Barriers and Reaching Peaks in Pakistan
In Pakistan, our instructors wrapped up an impactful quarter, spending the last months of the year leading community outreach activities such as hiking, yoga, and rock climbing—engaging over 1,400 local community members. They have also been honing their skills, refining curriculum, and recruiting participants for the Instructor Trainee program.
Training local women to become skilled Ascend instructors will allow us to expand our afterschool program, reach more girls, and lay the foundation for growth into new towns. More importantly, it creates a pathway for women to pursue meaningful careers in outdoor education and tourism, fostering long-term change in the industry.
As we step into 2025, we remain committed to empowering women through leadership, education, and adventure.
