Hello, this is Soo-yeon from Peace Winds Korea.
Today I would like to share the story of the people in Tanisma, Turkiye.
It's been 6 months since the earthquake hit Turkiye. Their homes, schools and workplaces were destroyed and haven't come back yet. One of the most serious problems is the mental health of people in Turkiye.
We interveiwed the residents in Tanisma about their current life.
1. Kerem (alias)
He said that as it gets hotter and hotter, people's mental health gets worse and worse. After the earthquake, many people lost their jobs and started wandering the streets from morning to night. Sometimes they met neighbors on the street, but most of the time it became a fight because they are so sensitive and in hard time. It didn't happen before the earthquake.
2. Defne (alias)
She talked about her family suffering from Trauma. Her cousin decided to return to his hometown because he was worried about his parents' mental health. After the earthquake, his parents became mentally unstable. So they easily get frightened as if they were infected with a big disease, even if it's just a cold.
"I thought it would get better in a month, but it didn't. A few years from now, I don't know where I will be. This unstable situation breaks our hearts". - Dafne
3. Eymen (alias)
"For 6 months there was nothing to be happy about. My life changed 180 degrees just for one night".
A refugee who lost his pregnant sister in the earthquake said.
After the earthquake, Eymen's 5 family and 7 relatives are living in the tent. They suffer from snakes and bugs that come into their tent every day. Even when it rains, all the family members are terrified because the raindrops that hit the tent remind them of the earthquake.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Turkiye experienced more than 30,000 aftershocks in May , and the July 25 earthquake was a magnitude 5.5.
Turkiye still needs your help. PeaceWinds will continue to be there to help Turkiye rebuild from the earthquake.
