Summary

MiracleFeet is eliminating the disability caused by untreated clubfoot, one of the world's most common birth defects affecting 1 in 800 babies worldwide. Left untreated, clubfoot causes lifelong disability, stigmatization, and marginalization. MiracleFeet is bringing the proven, low-cost treatment (known as the Ponseti method) to low- and middle-income countries. This project will provide quality treatment to 100 children in Nigeria, preventing a lifetime of suffering for each child.

Challenge

Over 10,000 children are born with clubfoot every year in Nigeria, and 85% do not receive the treatment they need. Due to chronically limited access to care, there is also a huge population of older children living with untreated clubfoot who could still be treated with the Ponseti method. Without treatment, these children face increased risk of abuse and a lifetime of pain, disability, stigma, and hardship, excluded from educational, social, and employment opportunities throughout their lives.

Solution

This project will provide high-quality clubfoot treatment to 100 children in Nigeria. For less than $500 per child, MiracleFeet will supply treatment materials to health clinics, train local healthcare providers in the Ponseti method, train midwives and maternity nurses to detect clubfoot in newborns, raise awareness of clubfoot and treatment so families know where to access care, support families throughout the treatment process to overcome access challenges, and monitor treatment quality.

Long-Term Impact

This project will fully treat 100 children for clubfoot in Nigeria, allowing each child to walk, run, play, attend school, and enjoy a lifetime of mobility and opportunity, free from the pain and stigma of living with untreated clubfoot. Because individuals treated for clubfoot can, as adults, enter the workforce and secure meaningful employment, we estimate that each child treated will earn an average of $130,000 in additional lifetime earnings-an impressive return for a $500 intervention.
