Indigenous Youth Achieving Their Dreams Project

By Natalia de Sousa Martins | Project Coordinator

The Community Mental Health Movement (MSMCBJ) works to promote the value of indigenous culture and the self-esteem of the Pitaguary people through its Indigenous Youth Achieving Their Dreams Project, whose target audience is youth ages 14 to 25.

We know that we sent you an update a few weeks ago with a brief overview of the project. Please enjoy a more in-depth look at our progress by checking out the attached document, where you can see a list of the activities the youth engaged in, as well as several pictures of them in action!

In seeking to develop the youths' professional and academic skills, self-esteem groups, community therapy, art and culture, and spiritual reinforcement are all conducted with the Indigenous Systemic Community Approach. Everything is conducted through cultural dialogue symbolized by the expression "Mitakuye Oyasin," which means "We are all related," from the Lakota Sioux tribe. The same expression in Tupi (the indigenous language of the Pitaguary) means, "Iande meme maranongara." The ludic, formative and therapeutic dynamic involves children, youth, adults and the elderly. This project is also aligned with the urgency of disseminating and valuing indigenous culture, which in turn establishes ecophilia - love of nature - that considers Earth as mother, highlighting attitudes such as respect and care. These are critical for survival and the quality of life of all living beings.

We are very grateful to all of our donors and wish you all happy holidays. Mitayuke Oyasin!
