Wonderful news....through your support as well as offline donations, we managed to raise the full funding to complete the building of the second turf to accompany the first turf we built in 2020. The two turfs functioning next to each other have exceeded our expectations with their impact. The beauty of the two 5 a side turfs is that their impact is 3 fold; 1. They provide us with a top class facility for us to run programming and allow more children to benefit from our life skills through sports sessions on a regular basis; 2. The turfs create a consistent income for the organisation through renting them out for leagues and tournaments which in turn allow us to extend our programmes in other areas and support more children from the communities in a continuous sustainable way without relying on donations; 3. They have helped us create employment for 8 youth from the disadvantaged communities who were previously unemployed. These 8 young adults are employed to manage the facility, conduct coaching sessions and referee the tournaments and leagues.
Thanks to your donations we were able to pioneer a new form of Social Enterprise to continually support the growth of our programmes. Due to the success of this project and the financial as well as social return, we intend to build a third turf to help continue to build our Social Enterprise model allowing more children to benefit from our programmes and creating further youth employment within the disadvantaged communities of Nelson Mandela Bay.
"The social enterprise project of the 5 a side turfs has been extremely successful and forms part of a new way of looking at funding, where there is not only a social impact but also a financial return for the organisation. This creates more sustainability for our programmes to continue long into the future. This facility has reached 1000's of children, created employment for 8 previously unemployed youth and also brings in a monthly return of $2000 per month which is fed back into the United Through Sport programmes expanding their reach and longevity. It really is a win-win-win for social development." - Nick Mould, Director of United Through Sport, South Africa
