Summary

CEI's work in Haiti is thriving despite current civil unrest because it's 100% Haitian-led and managed, community-wide, and holistic. People closest to the problems have the most say. A reputable Haitian nonprofit manages it all: goats, ag, women's & youth groups, financial education, entrepreneurship & leadership training. CEI's democratic framework generates trust & transparency and builds civil infrastructure while meeting basic needs. To date, we've helped 400 families in 8 villages.

Challenge

Civil unrest and charges of corruption have destabilized Haiti. 59% of the people live on $2 per day. Inflation rate is 22%. People need food and jobs. Top-down solutions don't provide accountability, transparency, or sustainable results. Short-sighted aid programs have perpetuated poverty, corruption, and social injustices. Solutions need to meet basic needs from the ground up, build for the long-term, and using local expertise. Many resource-providers don't have access to all of that. We do.

Solution

CEI's programs are 100% Haitian-led and managed. People closest to the problems have the most say in solving them. Our democratic participatory approach meets food, nutrition, income, education, & business skill needs, builds leadership and civil infrastructure, and results in high level of local engagement. Dignity and sustainability come from give-back programs. Recipients donate baby goats and seeds from harvests to redistribute. CEI provide resources. Locals do all the rest.

Long-Term Impact

Generational poverty & injustice require solutions for the long-term. CEI team members have worked together for over 30 years. After one year with CEI a Haitian family can meet its nutrition and income needs. In 3 years, savings groups and farmer collectives are building a durable economic base and developing leaders to serve the common good. We bring together Haitian experts, partners, and resources so people can sustainably transform their own lives, their villages, and ultimately their nation.
