This qualification will prepare 59 unemployed community members and unqualified childcare workers over a one-year period to become qualified Child and Youth Care Workers in South Africa who can provide holistic therapeutic services and support for the development of children and youth who are orphaned and vulnerable.
There is currently a shortage of social service professionals in South Africa. There is also a shortage of trained child and youth care workers. Many careworkers working in children's homes and youth centres do not have formal qualifications, thus impacting on the quality of care. These careworkers, the organisations that they are working in, and unemployed community members who wish to work with children and youth, will benefit from this training.
This qualification is an entry-level NQF 5 qualification for those who want to enter the field of Child & Youth Care Work (CYCW) as a potential career. It builds on practical experience and community-based learning and equips people for their role as a child and youth care worker. As such, the qualification will also be valuable for those who may have been practicing within the field, but without formal recognition.
This course will train 59 Child and Youth Care workers in one year. The course provides a resource for Child and Youth Care Centres to train their careworkers that do not have any formal training and for those who are currently unemployed. We hope to be able to roll the course out to many more participants. This qualification will equip and educate the participants to provide holistic, basic, developmental care for orphaned, vulnerable and at-risk children and youth.
