Niluka’s Journey with Think Pink
Niluka faced a life-altering challenge when her husband, a tuk-tuk driver and the family’s sole provider, passed away from a terminal illness. Left to care for three school-aged children at the age of 40, she found herself without any source of income. The financial burden forced her to sell the family’s tuk-tuk just to afford food for her children.
Although Niluka had a driving license, the idea of becoming a tuk-tuk driver herself had never crossed her mind—female taxi drivers are a rare sight in Sri Lanka. Initially, she tried to make ends meet by sewing garments at home, but her earnings were insufficient to support her family.
However, with the help of Project Hope, Niluka was given the opportunity to train as a Think Pink tuk-tuk driver. She received a startup package that equipped her to launch her own driving service, providing her with a pathway to independence. Now, Niluka earns a stable income, enabling her to provide for her children, all of whom are thriving in their studies thanks to her newfound financial stability as a Think Pink driver.
Her story is one of resilience, showing how with your support economic empowerment through the Think Pink women driving for women initiative can transform lives.
