Help us train single parent mums living below the poverty line to drive, provide safety for other women and lift themselves out of poverty. Think Pink tuk tuks provide an income for women taxi drivers and safety for the women and girls using them for work and school. These mums are the first female tuk tuk drivers in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka! Your donation will go towards driver training, personal safety training, business start up and a highly visible pink tuk tuk.
According to the UNFPA, 90% of women aged between 15-35 questioned in a survey in Sri Lanka stated that they had suffered some form of sexual harassment while using public transport. There appears to be no policy to protect women and girls on public transport in Sir Lanka. Only 4% of those who have suffered harassment have reported it to the police. This project will positively impact hundreds of mothers & daughters in Southern Sri Lanka, offering them safe journeys to work and school.
Think Pink tuk tuks provide safe journeys for mother's and daughter's to work and school. Mums can send their daughters to school knowing that they are in safe hands as there is no longer a risk of harassment. Women travelling to work alone are safe and the fear of being sexually harassed is eliminated. Reducing the anxiety for mothers having to send their daughters to school on public transport means that they have more time for work, now that they no longer have to accompany their daughter.
Benefits for women drivers: Reliable source of income for single parent mothers to help lift their families out of poverty. Reduced risk of family breakdown and families being torn apart by poverty. Creating agents of change to promote gender equality and positive role models of women. Benefits for female passengers: Safe journeys on transport with no risk of sexual harassment. More time for mothers to work. Reduced numbers of women being harassed on public transport.
