Lakmi’s Journey: Driving Towards Independence
When Lakmi’s husband, the sole breadwinner of their family, passed away, she was left with three young children and a meager income from her home sewing business. Despite having a driving license, she had no vehicle to earn a living—until Project Hope, funded by the Rosie May Foundation, changed everything.
Through the initiative, Lakmi was given the opportunity to rent a highly visible pink tuk tuk, transforming her future. Now, she drives children to school, helps women commute to work, and even uses the vehicle to deliver garments to her customers. With her newfound financial independence, she can provide food for her family, support her children’s education, and afford additional after-school classes—empowering them with better opportunities for the future.
But her impact doesn’t stop there. Lakmi has become a role model for other women, proving that they too can break barriers and take control of their financial futures. She is even called in for emergencies, helping women in labor reach medical care in time.
Lakmi’s story is one of resilience, empowerment, and transformation. She has not only lifted herself above the poverty line but is also driving towards a future of financial independence and freedom—one ride at a time.
