Kamukama Charles - Success Story

By Charles Remo Joseph | Program Head - Therapy and Rehabilitation

Initial Assessment Results

Upon his first evaluation in February 2023 Charles demonstrated significant developmental delays associated with Athetoid Cerebral Palsy. His presentation included limited trunk control, involuntary movements, and a lack of verbal communication. He was unable to sit without help and struggled with coordination, necessitating high levels of assistance for daily functions.

Therapeutic Interventions

To address these challenges, a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach was implemented:

  • Physiotherapy: Concentrated on improving balance, trunk stability, and coordination through standing and motor exercises.
  • Occupational Therapy: Targeted fine motor development and tracing skills to enhance functional participation.
  • Speech & Language Therapy: Provided speech stimulation to build communication skills.
  • Family Support: Integrated caregiver training and home-based programs to ensure consistency.

Progress and Outcomes

Charles has achieved remarkable milestones since starting therapy. He now possesses the balance to stand alone for brief intervals and is beginning to use two-word phrases. Additionally, his ability to manage tracing tasks with minimal guidance and his improved sitting stability reflect significant gains in his overall functional independence.

Key Learnings

This case highlights that the combination of early intervention from multiple specialties and active caregiver participation is vital for enhancing the quality of life for children with athetoid cerebral palsy. The synergy between the clinical team and the family has been fundamental to Charles' success.

Future Objectives

Ongoing therapy will focus on the following developmental areas:

  1. Advancing independent balance and mobility.
  2. Expanding verbal communication and speech abilities.
  3. Refining fine motor control and self-care autonomy.
