Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues:
After a challenging school year with all the restrictions and online classes, it was time for a well-deserved spring break for the children. With most children being vaccinated and the government relaxing the lockdown requirements, we began planning activities to take our children out of the project. With our children entering their Spring break for the next month, our program moved from in-class lessons in school to one that focused on social norms and values.
Our volunteer, Khun Shiho, invited our children to experience Phuket Eco Elephant Park. This activity was the start of a fun-filled holiday of activities. Our children learned about the elephants in Thailand, what they eat, the differences between captive and wild elephants, and the laws that protect them and their life cycle.
As much as our children enjoyed being outdoors in nature; learning about Thailand's national animal, the Chang (elephant), they were ready to escape and experience a movie day. Through the kindness of our board member Khun Colin, our children spent a Saturday enjoying their fill of pizza and enjoying "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" with popcorn. Another project supporter, Khun Mat Christie Hindmarch, treated our children to ice cream to top this great day off. Our children were required to stay in our project for the past two years because of the pandemic. This outing allowed them to experience the broader society as it began to reopen.
While managing the children's activities during the lockdown, we worked to invite outside individuals to interact with our children. One of our volunteers, Khun Shiho, reached out to her contacts to bring into our project two individuals who would expand on our spring break activities. These two individuals, Khun Frank and Khun Em displayed a true love of working with children. The focus of this activity was physical activities such as Pilates, Zumba, Boot Camp, Muay Thai, etc. Our children have already experienced two sessions of Muay Thai boxing. Though schooling would expand our children's mental growth, these physical activities are meant to expand the physical needs of the children.
We are a quarter way through the children's spring break, and we have planned several more activities for them: a boat trip through Phang-nga Bay sponsored by another board member Khun David, and a beach day coordinated by Khun Colin, and more movie outings. Most of the year was focused on education; this time of the year is meant to focus on fun. With the support of our board members and the community, we will achieve
During 2021/22, our children at the Life Home Project Foundation, like many children worldwide, were required to learn online. Although this was challenging at times, especially for the younger ones, our children overcame this challenge through hard work and determination.
This coming school year is promising; most children are vaccinated against COVID and hopefully will be returning to in-school classes. Though online classes were a good attempt to provide basic education for our children, this experience lacked the necessary skills such as socializing with their peers.
As we move towards the start of the new school year – May 2002 to March 2023, the goal is for our children to return to some normality and experience normal school life, albeit with some ongoing regulations such as social distancing, etc.
During the past school year, our staff created a strong program by combining the online classes and hiring tutors to assist with these class lessons.
This year, though the in-class lesson will greatly benefit our children's learning, we plan to supplement their learning by incorporating tutors who will be tasked to assist in the educational process. Our goal has and will be to focus on education to break the cycle of poverty in these marginalized communities.
