The Boys Concern Project is a youth-driven initiative aimed at empowering adolescent boys and young men (ages 14-24 years) in Zambia with the skills, knowledge, and values necessary to become advocates for gender equality and prevent gender-based violence (GBV). Through the evidence-based Coaching Boys Into Men (CBIM) curriculum, this project provides mentorship and training sessions in schools and sports settings, teaching boys about healthy relationships, respect, and non-violent behaviors.
In Zambia, high rates of GBV and harmful gender norms have long impacted communities, particularly affecting women and girls. According to UNICEF Zambia, more than one-third (36%) of Zambian women have experienced physical violence since age 15. Boys and young men often lack mentorship in positive masculinity, which perpetuates cycles of violence.
The Boys Concern Project engages boys through interactive workshops and mentorship using the evidence-based Coaching Boys Into Men (CBIM) curriculum, helping them understand their roles in preventing violence and supporting gender equality. By educating boys in respect, empathy, and non-violent conflict resolution, the project builds a foundation for long-term change in communities. Partnerships with local schools, community leaders, and sports coaches ensure sustainable engagement and impact.
The project aims to create a safer, more inclusive, equitable and just environment for all community members, reduce GBV incidents, and transform boys and young into allies for gender equality. Over time, these boys and young men will lead by example, becoming role models for future generations and contributing to lasting societal change in Zambia.
