Although COVID-19 is affecting the entire world, Peru is experiencing an unprecedented crisis. Despite the measures adopted by our government, the virus is spreading rapidly in our country and in Lima, the city where more than 10 million inhabitants live.

In Alto Peru it is not the exception, since it is a mainly informal community, children, young people and older adults are exposed to a lot of risk. Overcrowding and day-to-day living make it so difficult for people to stay home. For this reason, as an organization we have decided to provide help by channeling donations to buy basic food and cleaning supplies. We have already made a first donation to more than 100 families, allocating a little more than $ 5,000 in this campaign.

However, this is not enough. In the last few days the virus has spread in the neighborhood and we hope this does not get much worse.

Our next activity is oriented to disinfect the community with a specialized company, and to carry out a communication campaign in the neighborhood to further promote social distancing, and help from young people so that adults do not leave their homes.

We greatly appreciate your help, with it we have been able to give a little hope to more than 100 families who live without being seen by the government.

During the past year we have worked with more than 150 children and young people through surfing, muaythai and street football. We believe that sport has a lot of potential and we see every day how it helps us to create a more equitable society.

Thanks to your support this year we have not only benefited a good number of children at social risk, we have also managed to generate employment for 12 young people in the community, who after being trained by our organization, are now mentors of the most children, allowing our methodology to "close the circle".

With the surftherapy project we are working with 35 children from two different communities, all with a lot of potential but also exposed to different adverse factors for their development (violence, crime, drugs, etc.). In total we have a 38% female participation, and we are always looking to increase this figure. The program has been working in the best way, and will continue for another 7 months in 2020.

By 2020 we will continue to use the power of sport to create a positive impact on the lives of children and young people. We invite you to continue collaborating with our work and contact us whenever you want to info@altoperu.org

Thank you very much

Since we started using sports to create social change, we have seen great impact.

Through surf and muaythai we have been promoting safe spaces and positive behaviors among children and youth exposed to social risk.

When we started this crowdfunding campaign we were also engaging with potential donors to present our work and try to get the needed fundings to keep running our sport for development program.

Although we did not reach what we expected through the platform, we have been receiving donations in different ways, and we are happy to share that our programs are running succesfully.

At the end of September we will start a Surf Therapy program with 40 children from three different slums from Chorrillos, Lima. This program will be implemented in collaboration with Waves for Change, the Universidad Continental and the Municipality of Chorrillos. During the last two weeks we started mapping the two new communities, interviewing parents and local actors to define with which children we will be working according to the level of risk they are exposed to.

We will keep working to provide safe spaces, skills to cope with stress and exciting activities through sports, to as many children as possible.
