Background:
The overarching influence of poverty in teenage pregnancy is well documented, particularly, in rural areas where teenage pregnancies are more prevalent. The enormity of poverty is demonstrated in teenage pregnancy and identification with stakeholders attaching significance to it. Poverty is a contributory factor in child labor as children live-in as maids, in overcrowded neighborhoods, contributing to sexual exploitation. Poverty served as a motivation for sex in exchange for necessities with implications for parental supervision. It is on this basis that poverty reduction in households, particularly, rural households is considered as possible solution to teenage pregnancy and teenage motherhood.
Introduction:
To respond to challenges associated with teenage pregnancy holistically, Ajoke Ayisat Afolabi Foundation delivered a variety of advocacy and empowerment programmes for 50 households at Egwueke, Abia state. While the advocacy programmes created awareness around emergent laws on sexual and domestic violence, as well as harmful practices, the empowerment programmes targeted households’ livelihoods vulnerabilities. This is to address project unexpected outcomes associated with livelihoods improvement for parents, particularly, mothers of teenage mothers who are solely responsible for the care of the teenagers and their babies.
In this regard, the Foundation organized a one-day workshop on recycling and waste management on March 11, 2025, at the Egwuleke Village Hall, located in Ohuhu, Abia Statem as part of commemorative activities for International Women’s Day. This initiative was designed to empower the women with practical knowledge and skills on sustainable waste management practices, introduce viable income-generating opportunities through recycling, and promote greater environmental responsibility and cleanliness within the community.
