Summary

This project targets advocacy to change negative policy and practices and promote quality SRHR, education, welfare, healthcare and empowerment services for 100 at-risk girls, would-be and existing teenage mothers in 10 selected communities in Abia state. In addition to contributing a Pilot Child Care Centre to serve the two nearby Umuezeagwu and Amaeke Communities, ultimately, This project will this project will return at least 10 girls to school and skill up at least 40 girls

Challenge

A survey conducted in Abia State Teaching Hospital, Nigeria, in 2019 indicates that a total of 359 cases of teenage pregnancy were recorded. Out of these, about 263 (73.2%) fall between the age of 15-17 and were single, 210 (58.5%) were currently out of school. The prevalence of teenage pregnancy was 163(45.4%) was significantly associated with age, poverty and lack of education. In the era of sexual literacy and availability of contraception, teenage pregnancy still remains a major problem.

Solution

The solution strategy includes the following: Engage stakeholders in 10 communities through advocacy to change cultural beliefs / practice / support networks Engage community clusters in 5 FGDs to engender project support Create awareness on sexual and reproductive rights and access to services Enroll at least 50 pregnant and parenting teenagers back to school / vocational skills Pilot at least one Lactation Centre / Creche to help communities share the burden of child care

Long-Term Impact

Highlight teenage pregnancy issues in 10 communities to: (1) Change negative community practice of stigmatisation of teenage mothers, promote Inclusion / social integration and support for teenage mothers (2) Strengthen access to SRHR services and improve reporting of abuse (3) Increase school enrollment and access to economic opportunities (4) strengthen share of child care burden in community and (5) Improve the ability of at least 50 teenage mothers to exercise agency and, own assets
