Teen Mother Empowerment in Cameroon

Friends, Donors and Supporters,

3.5 Million Children are illiterate (either undereducated or uneducated) in Cameroon and 60% are girls (UNESCO 2015).

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. This year, as the international community assesses progress under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) since their implementation in 2000 and sets goals to be achieved by 2030, girls born at the turn of the millennium have reached adolescence, and the generation of girls born this year will be adolescents in 2030.

In recognition of the importance of investing in adolescent girls’ empowerment and rights, both today and in the future, the theme of International Day of the Girl Child for 2015 is: The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030.
For three days, October 9, 10 and 11, 2015 SODEIT Cameroon was able to mobilise a social Group - ABLE Brothers and Sisters and young university volunteers made up of 7 young and vibrant girls, 15 mothers, uncles, fathers and Aunties to educate their communities and primary schools pupils in Bokwai, Bokoko, Bonduma, Misilili and Boasa likomba on " The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision 2030".

The empowerment and social mobilization campaigns was sponsored by the "Girl Effect Fund" triple down effect from “The Girls Tech Documentation Center “ proceeds and donors to our Teen Mothers Empowerment . US$2 250 was spent for the three days covering transportation, feeding, networking and ECI materials covering right to education not early Marriage, Health, and Social Inclusion to end poverty before it starts.

90 houses and five primary schools were targeted for the three days but passed the target with ninety-five houses visited with a population of over four hundred in the five towns were effected and impacted. Thank you "Girl Effect Fund" for the seeds planted and "Teenage Mother Empowerment" projects supporters, friends and donors.
