One sunny Saturday, a week before the school opens, seventy-nine active Aflatoun children in Abuyog, Leyte, gathered for an Aflatoun Camp in one of the beach grounds of Abuyog. Their goal is to have fun, meet other Aflatoun kids from other schools, and collectively share their efforts in saving the earth, in their own little way. The kids were guided by the theme, “Me and Aflatoun Saving the Earth for a Bright Future.” It is the Aflatoun’s answer to the urgent need of the province to do practical and collective measures in preventing flood that damaged crops, caused diseases, and adversely affected the livelihood of the people. Children, as young as they are, can already make small contributions to make their communities a safe and happy place to live in. The Aflatoun camp is a summer activity for children from different schools. NATCCO and the local partner organization prepared fun and learning-filled activities for children like quiz bee, parlor games, team-building-activities, and workshop. One of the highlights of the camp was the tree-growing activity. Children planted twelve mango and jackfruit trees. These trees thrive in the Philippine soil and also bear sweet fruit. After planting these trees, each school was tasked to take care of the trees.
Abuyog is the largest coastal town on the eastern coast of the island of Leyte facing Leyte Gulf out into the Pacific Ocean. Aflatoun kids are mostly children of fisher folks and farmers. There are currently 2,070 aflatoun kids from ten schools in Abuyog that receive social and financial education through the Aflatoun program.
