Children savers learn about gender and development

By Lasalette Gumban | Youth Program Officer

In the Aflatoun Child Social and Financial Education program, children gained a deeper appreciation on gender equity and its role in promoting social justice. The Aflatoun workbooks that the children learn in school challenge the gender stereotypes. Gender issues affect financial empowerment of both men and women, and the younger the children are made aware of the issues; the easier it would be for them to make empowered financial decisions in the future.

On November 24, 2012, eighty elementary kids from the six schools under the social and financial education program attended the Gender Sensitivity Training in the training hall of Tagum Cooperative, Tagum City. The trainers used child-friendly methodologies to make the training fun, relevant, and learning-filled for children.  It gave the kids a better understanding and appreciation of the different roles their fathers, mothers, and siblings play inside the home.  The training also opened their eyes about the different gender stereotypes, and how as young and empowered children they can play a part in dispelling the stereotypes so that every child will have equal opportunities when they grow up.

The kids plan to organize more trainings for self-improvement and entrepreneurship.  The children felt happy and empowered that through their savings, they have the opportunity to improve themselves and hone their talents and skills through continuous education.
