Every child’s effort to start saving begins with the savings box. In the Philippines, we call it piggy bank or bamboo bank or simply “alkansiya.” It is not only about saving extra coins but it is also about valuing resources. It is not only about making it filled-up but is also about making small steps to fulfill a dream. The 35,000 children involved in the Aflatoun program is just the beginning of a dream of making every Filipino child money-smart and entrepreneurial. As NATCCO is strongly promoting financial education to children through the Aflatoun program, we are paying tribute to the humble savings box that started it all. This year, NATCCO is staging its first SavingsBox of the Year contest, in line with the International Year of the Cooperative’s theme, “Cooperative Enterprises Build a Better World. The contest is a chance for the young savers to express their creativity and artistic talents, as well as share their views on the importance of savings. Kids from different provinces already sent their entries. The entries showed an interesting mixture of creativity and craftsmanship. Winners will be announced on May 26, 2012. Special prizes await the most creative young saver.
