News from Honduras from our Talleres project

By Malin Bornemann | Board Member

Dear supporters,

Here are some news from Honduras from our Talleres project:

Youth unemployment among 15 to 24-year-olds is particularly high in Honduras. In 2022, it was around 16 percent. Many children and young people drop out of school early after the 6th grade to help their families earn a living. Without a secondary school education, many adolescents and young adults under 30 often work in the informal sector. The project ‘Talleres’ (Spanish for workshops) prepares young people for a self-determined future and contributes to combating poverty in Honduras.

As part of ‘Talleres’, young people participate in the vocational training workshops of nph Honduras and learn the necessary theoretical and practical skills in various craft professions. There are seven different areas to choose from: Welding, carpentry, tailoring, electrical engineering, automotive mechatronics, car painting, and cosmetics.

Internships are another component of the 'Talleres' training at nph Honduras. After the participants have received their certificate in one of the vocational workshops, they complete an eight-week work placement. nph Honduras has contacts with professional carpentry workshops, sewing and tailoring workshops, metal workshops, electrical workshops, car repair shops, and beauty salons, where the young people complete their work placements. The practical experience helps the participants to better prepare for an independent future by gaining concrete work experience in a profession.

In 2024, a total of 78 girls and boys have completed their vocational training with a state-recognised qualification. More than 100 new students are registered for vocational training in 2025. The young people were able to apply their practical skills directly to repair work in the nph children's village and in community halls, as well as in the production of furniture or school clothing. Most of the participants report increased self-esteem after completing their training. The young people from the communities taking part in the vocational training programme now also have access to psychological support.

Thanks to your support, these measures could be implemented in 2024. Thank you!

Best wishes,

the entire PEN PAPER PEACE team
