Talleres - workshops with an uncertain future

15 year old Louise (name changed) said: "One day I would like to weld at home and maybe have my own workshop. Very few girls do this course, but I really wanted to do it. This way I can take a different path in life and develop my skills."

Testimonials like Louise's convince us that Talleres is such an important project bringing youth in Honduras closer to pursuing a professional career while finishing their secondary education! The fields of work include welding, carpentry, cosmetology, tailoring, electricity and motor vehicle mechanics. We strongly encourage participants to challenge traditional gender roles - like Louise.

Thanks to your help we have been able to support the project financially and will continue to do so. However, the financial situation of the project is permanently difficult. Therefore, your continuous support is very much appreciated. The budget for the workshops is mostly used for salaries and materials. Modernizing the workshops would improve the quality. This includes the work areas, but also the techniques the students learn. The goal is to certificate 50 students this year. Also, we hope to open additional workshops, such as farming and motor vehicle painting.

News from Talleres

Dear supporters,

With 2022 coming to an end, we want to thank you for supporting our project Talleres this year. "Talleres" (workshops) offers young people the opportunity to acquire vocational skills in different workshops, ranging from sewing to cabinetmaking.

We are proud of all the good news we received in 2022 about our “Talleres” project. After a long break due to COVID-19, classes could resume from February onwards. The construction of the new Talleres school building is about to be finalised. Particularly, we are proud of the 16 students that successfully completed their program at Talleres and obtained their relevant vocational qualifications!

Honduran Independence Day

On September 15^th2022, Honduras celebrated 201years of independence from Spanish colonial force. To mark this occasion, we provide a digital excursion on our Global Learning platform on Honduran history, society, and the Honduran struggle for independence. Update from Talleres - Workshops in Honduras!

Dear supporters,

We hope this report finds you well! Here are the latest updates on PEN PAPER PEACE’s project Talleres in Honduras:

1. School construction

We have good news to share about our project Talleres: "Talleres" (workshops) offers young people the opportunity to acquire vocational skills in seven different workshops. The construction work to rebuild the Talleres school building successfully started on December 1, 2021 and the renovation of the roof as well as the electrical installations were finalised. The construction company renewed the floors in the school wing and repainted the walls which were damaged by the previously leaking roof. The classrooms and facilities are now rain-proof with the new roof, which greatly improves the learning environment for the children of the Santa Fe School. Phase 2 of the project was also implemented according to plan in the first half of 2022: The floors were renewed, the bathrooms reconstructed and the doors and windows replaced.

2. More good news

After a long break due to corona, classes were resumed in mid-February. Both the electrical workshop and the new car paint shop have been in use since then and form an important part of the apprenticeship. Most recently, 16 students successfully completed the program and obtained the relevant vocational qualifications!

3. Writing competition

Last year we successfully hosted a writing competition for young students (10 to 14 years) in all our project countries (Haiti, Honduras, Nambia, Germany and Italy). We received many courageous and bright submissions that we are currently translating to share with you. To close this report, we would like to share a phrase from a 12-year old Honduran student: "In life there are a lot of obstacles and you think you won't be able to break them, but in life, if you set your mind to it, you can break them and I too can't do it. Never give up until you do it."
