Updates from Talleres and writing competition

The school with its new roof

Dear supporter,

As spring is around the corner, some news from our project in Honduras:

School Renovation

Let us start into the new season with some good news: The construction work that was planned at the school in Honduras and that we were already reporting on in January is, as of today, even ahead of schedule. The renovation of the roof could already be finished, as well as the electrical installations. The construction company is currently renewing the floors in the school wing, and repainting the walls which were damaged by the previously leaking roof. The classrooms and facilities are now rain-proof with the new roof, which greatly improves the learning environment for the children of the Santa Fe School. The project is to be completed soon which means children can return significantly earlier to the wing of Santa Fe School than expected.

Talleres

Classes began on February 17th offering once again the opportunity to young people from vulnerable communities to acquire professional skills in seven different workshops, as the automotive painting workshop is open to students for the first time and the electricity workshop could be reopened after it had been closed during the pandemic. The program could open again for pupils outside of the nph village for kids. Prior, this has not been possible due to pandemic safety measures.

Graduation

Some more good news to wrap up the update: 16 pupils have successfully completed the program and were able to graduate with the corresponding vocational qualifications and thus hopefully able to break the cycle of poverty!

Writing competition

This year we want to encourage children and young people once more to write down their thoughts and feelings. Therefore, we are hosting our writing competitionin collaboration with the Eckenroth Stiftung for already the third time. It will take place in all our project countries (Haiti, Honduras, Namibia, Germany and Italy). Children and young people from 10 to 14 years of age are called upon to send us their texts on the topic of sadness, anger, despair - happiness, courage, and gratitude.

A great start to the new year!

Dear supporter,

We hope you had an awesome start into the new year. In Honduras, the new year certainly brings some positive changes for the young people at the Talleres (workshops): Thanks to a generous funding partner, one wing of the school is currently being rebuilt! The roof and the electrical wires are renewed, as well as the sanitary tracts and windows and doors. Starting in February, the students will be able to learn undisturbed and under a safe roof. Thanks to your generosity, it is possible to support the project also in the future, albeit only on a part-time basis to secure longterm operations.

The vaccination rate among children in Honduras is high, and thanks to the availability of vaccines for children, also students from the local communities can come back to the program in February.

We want to thank you for your support and hope that we will be able to secure the financial situation of the project in the future!

Project Contest

We at PEN PAPER PEACE ourselves are starting off the new year with a contest aimed at all young people who want to make a change in this world. We welcome any creative ideas on how to make the world a little bit better. The contest is organized by the FutureLab, a group of young volunteers within PEN PAPER PEACE. If you have an idea for a project or know someone that would be interested in participating, we would be delighted to receive an application until the end of February. We even have more great news to share: PEN PAPER PEACE officially welcomes a new Managing Director: We are beyond happy and excited to introduce to you Inka Lange who starts in February! Sadly, this also means that we will have to say goodbye to Jana Gottschalk, who deserves our utmost gratitude and respect for the fantastic job and unimaginable service she has rendered PPP in the past almost four years.

Graduation at the "Talleres" - thanks to you!

Dear supporter,

there is fantastic news from the workshops: In November, 31 young people will graduate thanks to your help!

Despite the pandemic and the continued low vaccination rates in Honduras, the training centers have been open again since March, albeit with limited access to comply with all Corona-related regulations. The local staff were able to offer five different training courses: Welding, Carpentry, Cosmetology, Tailoring and Automotive Mechanics. The latter has been offered for the first time this year.

Your donations made it possible to finance these trainings and to offer the new course. Therefore, 31 students of the 6th-9th grade, aged between 13 and 16 years, will be able to complete their training in November with the official certificates, so that the doors to the labor market will be open to them.

We are also very happy that boys as well as girls have participated in all the trainings and especially that the participation of girls in the welding training has increased. At the moment, we are working on preparing materials and premises for training in vehicle painting, which is to be offered from 2022. To make this possible and to secure future operations, we need your continued support.

10 years PPP

There was also a good reason to celebrate this summer! Pen Paper Peace e.V. celebrated its 10th anniversary and we put on a great online festival. There were concerts, workshops and networking. Among other things, we gave a stage to the winners of the international writing competition that we launched together with the Eckenroth Foundation. The winners, aged 10 to 14, presented their texts on the topic of "borders" and "friendship" and moved us all deeply. The event was a great success and we were able to draw attention to our projects.
