The 2022-2023 school year will mark our fourth year of Environmental Education at the Los Algarrobos School. This year, we have created a new position "Environmental Education Coordinator" to take the program to new heights! Jenn, native of Alaska is taking charge and including more activities, topics and workshops than ever before. With her help, we will also be able to take these activities beyond the classrooms at Los Algarrobos and include members of the greater community.
The Los Algarrobos school is situated in Canoa, an isolated beach town community that depends on a precarious tourist economy. In Canoa, it is still normal to burn garbage or throw it just anywhere. Living next to the beach this is particularly worrisome for the health of the ocean. In the rural areas, many locals practice slash and burn monoculture. The government mandated curriculum teaches very little about the environment and the effect humans have on it, so we created our own program!
This program brings the urgency of environmental care to the students' attention by going outside the classroom. When students face problems and create solutions with their own hands, in their own homes, they are empowered to make change. Through professional development workshops, our teachers will learn to work environmentalist thinking into everyday classes and civil hours. This year with the new coordinator, we will be able to include more members of the greater community in our activities.
Education is the key to societal changes. At school, by incorporating activities into a weekly and monthly routine, we hope to permanently change bad environmental habits. Through education campaigns, hands-on activities, public fairs, we hope to reach beyond our students and into the greater community. Canoa, as a town, could change its relationship to the ocean and surrounding farms, making it a healthy and harmonious place for our families to live in the future.
