Through the Gift of the Givers Hunger Alleviation project in Malawi we will deliver farmer inputs to rural families who depend on agriculture for food and income. The farmer inputs provide a long-term food security solution to families who are otherwise surviving on less than a dollar a day.
70% of Malawi's population face chronic hunger daily. That's more than 12 million people living below the poverty line, surviving on less than $1 a day. Malawi's economy is dominated by agriculture and as much as 87% of Malawians depend on agriculture for income and food. The country's prevailing food insecurity (two decades worth), is amplified by the lack of agricultural resources, supplies and a technical skill-set. These challenges are exacerbated by weather shocks.
Farmer Packs: Consists of fertilizers, maize seed, legume seed, veg seed & pesticide. In 2020 we reached 4900 families who are subsequently made food secure over a period. Irrigation: To relieve the dependence on rain-fed crops, we install solar powered irrigation that pumps water from boreholes. Food Packs: To meet the immediate need of a starving family, Gift of the Givers delivers food packs that last an average family of 5 for 2 weeks. In 2020 our food packs reached 11 320 families.
Gift of the Givers encourages self-sustainability, and whilst we provide the farming inputs, we also host training workshops that educate farming families on improved farming methodologies. This has proven beneficial as more efficient and cost effective methods of farming are adopted by families and shared among peers. The ripple effect being that the knowledge and skill-set is passed down from generation to generation as a means to provide, not only food, but an income.
