Gift of the Givers helps keep girls in school through the delivery of re-usable Mina Cups. These cups provide a long-term solution for girls who cannot afford the monthly expense of sanitary pads and miss out on school because of it. Through your support we can provide 5 year relief to young girls allowing them an equal opportunity at education, unhindered by their menstruation.
South African school-going girls continue to forge ahead despite the challenge of inadequate sanitary supplies during menstruation. For several weeks, in an academic year, the lack of sanitary pads force girls to skip school for up to a week per month on average. The burden of catching up on missed lessons is often too much to bear and is a major contributor to the high drop-out rate. Additionally, when alternative protective measures fail them girls face humiliation and degradation among peers.
Through our Human Development project, Gift of the Givers delivers Mina Cups to girls who otherwise cannot afford sanitary pads. Not only do we provide a suitable & environmentally-friendly alternative to sanitary pads, but our team provides training on its use as well as discuss issues such as gender-based violence and female health.
The Mina Cups are re-usable for up to five years. For tertiary students, the cup is meant to last the duration of their degree until they enter the workforce and can afford their own hygiene products. For the average school-going girl, two cups will see them through from the latter part of primary school till grade 12. With one less inhibition, girls can look forward to graduating from school and breaking the cycle of poverty.
