The project aims at teaching 2500 girls from rural areas in Tanzania how to make their own reusable sanitary pads using locally available materials. The project will provide girls with a sustainable, affordable, and eco-friendly alternative to disposable menstrual products. On top of that, it will not only help girls in managing their periods with dignity, but also educate them about sustainability, health, and hygiene, and encourage them to take responsibility for their own well-being.
According to a UNESCO report, Tanzanian girls miss up to 20% of their school year due to a lack of menstrual products. Currently, the common solution to this huge problem is disposable sanitary pads, where a girl is estimated to use an average of 11000 to 15000 disposable pads in her lifetime which is equivalent to the garbage of a truck, and all these pads are made of 90% of plastic which takes 500 to 800 years to degrade.
Our solution empowers 2500 girls by teaching them how to create their own reusable sanitary pads using locally available materials such as cotton fabrics and towels. This approach tackles the challenges of affordability, accessibility, and sustainability. This sustainable solution not only empowers girls to take control of their menstrual health but also reduces waste from disposable menstrual products, hence promoting environmental sustainability.
By teaching 2500 girls to make reusable sanitary pads, we instill sustainable and hygienic practices that benefit them throughout their lives. The use of reusable pads reduces waste and fosters environmental consciousness. Girls become advocates, sharing their knowledge and empowering others. Open discussions about menstruation challenge social taboos, creating a more inclusive community environment.
