Project Report on "Supporting Kidney Patients & Dialysis Care" (#72117) Submitted to the GlobalGiving Community December 27, 2025 Dear GlobalGiving Community, Over the past three months, Face Up Generation Aid Organization (FUGAO) has advanced its mission to support vulnerable patients living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and those requiring dialysis care. Through your generosity, we have been able to provide lifesaving treatment, psychosocial support, and community awareness programs that restore dignity and hope to patients and their families. Kidney disease continues to pose a major health challenge in Ethiopia, where access to dialysis services is limited and costly. This project responds by combining direct patient support, medical assistance, awareness campaigns, and community empowerment to ensure that care is not only immediate-but sustainable. Thanks to your support, patients are moving from despair toward resilience, dignity, and renewed hope. Progress So Far (September - December 2025) FUGAO implemented integrated interventions across Addis Ababa, Amhara, and Oromia, targeting: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) Individuals undergoing dialysis treatment Low-income families unable to afford care Women and youth affected by kidney-related health challenges Working closely with hospitals, nephrologists, patient associations, and community volunteers, we ensured interventions were patient-centered, inclusive, and culturally appropriate. Major Achievements (September - December 2025) 1. Direct Patient Support Provided dialysis fee subsidies for 120 patients from low-income households Supplied essential medicines and nutritional supplements to 200 patients Distributed hygiene kits and protective supplies to 150 patients 2. Medical Equipment & Facility Support Donated dialysis consumables (filters, tubing, fluids) to 3 hospitals Supported maintenance of dialysis machines in 2 treatment centers Provided emergency transport assistance for 40 patients 3. Psychosocial & Family Support Conducted counseling sessions for 300 patients and caregivers Trained 25 community health volunteers in basic psychosocial support Established patient support groups in 4 dialysis centers 4. Awareness & Prevention Organized kidney health awareness campaigns reaching 2,500 community members Distributed educational materials on early detection and prevention Partnered with local radio stations to broadcast kidney health programs Early Impact & Stories of Resilience A Father's Hope - Addis Ababa Tesfaye, a 46-year-old father of three, was unable to afford regular dialysis. With project support, his treatment resumed, and he now spends more time with his children. "I feel alive again. My children have their father back." A Mother's Strength - Amhara Through counseling and nutritional support, Selam regained strength to continue dialysis. She now leads a patient support group, encouraging others to stay hopeful. Raising Awareness - Oromia Community campaigns helped families understand the importance of early kidney screening, leading to increased hospital visits and early interventions. Challenges We Encountered High costs of dialysis consumables and medicines Limited number of dialysis machines in public hospitals Patients traveling long distances for treatment Stigma and lack of awareness about kidney disease To overcome these challenges, FUGAO strengthened partnerships with hospitals, mobilized local donations, and prioritized patient-centered solutions. What's Next? (January - March 2026) Support 150 additional patients with dialysis fee subsidies Expand psychosocial support services to two new hospitals Establish women-led patient savings groups for medical support Provide nutritional packages tailored for dialysis patients Train 30 more community health volunteers Scale awareness campaigns to reach 5,000 community members Sustainability & Long-Term Vision Our approach ensures lasting impact by: Strengthening patient associations and leadership Supporting self-reliance through savings groups Integrating psychosocial care into dialysis centers Promoting awareness and prevention in communities Linking patients to government health services and insurance schemes By 2030, FUGAO aims to support 20,000 kidney patients with sustainable care and awareness programs.
