Medellin has been one of the cities hit by violence in Colombia. Social inequality has been a constant despite the great progress of the city in the last years. Development opportunities are related to the educational level of the people and the skills they have to work within the society. Spare time among children is one of the most important concerns to Explora Park to improve education and reduce violence and misery rates.
Without education and low living conditions, children become an attractive target for violence. Its possible to find Children under 12 years old using drugs and being part of gangs. Therefore, Explora Park carrying its educational mission out, offers to this communities different opportunities to have fun and learn using Science and Technology.Through Learning Labs, we seek to develop useful skills in children and teenagers in roder to improve their lifes.
Children from the most humble communities in the city are invited by Explora Park to participate in learning labs. On these activities they have fun, develop skills, motivations to different knowledge areas. Making a robot, using a computer, producing radio and television, are activities that develop talents for their future. Explora provides food, implements and transport to guarantee the attendance. Also, as the activities are developed by Explora Park (science museum).
With learning labs we make real several purposes: Children and teenagers invest spare time in positive things which move them away from illegal activities; we awake motivations and they can develop useful skills for their life. Many of these children want to become the future scientists, inventors or study careers related to science, communication and technology. With better educated children, we help to reduce the violence and poverty in our city.
