Life is How You Nurture It
The Purpose of our existence for the Foundation for Life, is to provide mentors who are available to the young, be it children or youths, or even young adults, who need a little help and encouragement, especially when life gets tough and it seems that no one cares. Once out of this negative mindset, the mentor then uses the positive activities available in the progressive and continual program, to help nuture the child into maturity.
Such was the case for Pen (not her real name).
Despite coming from a financially poor background, Pen was fortunate to be in a family where her dad watched closely over her, sometimes perhaps a little "to close", however, it was way better than an absent father.
When she was in Grade 4, she was introduced to the program run by our Foundation, and in it she discovered many activities and skills that would otherwise be denied her, simply because the local schools do not include them, for example simple cookery lessons, various skipping skill patterns,etc..
At that tender age, she was exposed to seeing and learning leadership skills and teamwork, which were so experientially powerful that she would remember them for life, as reflected when asked what it was that impacted her, she said, "In the program, I got a taste of what good leadership looks like, via the adults who looked after us and taught us. I would not have a chance to lead in games or learn coordinated physical movements with footdrill, had I not been in the program. These wonderful skills has stuck with me for life and I am truly thankful to my leaders for believing in me and entrusting me in leadership, though I was young and inexperienced".
Pen also had the opportunity to be involved in an international event, which greatly opened her eyes to global involvement, and had enlarged her confidence to use English as a foreign language, so that she would not fight shy of interacting with others of a different culture.
As she grew up, she studied in the open university system and in her freetime, she was invited to take up part-time voluntary work for the Foundation, working both in the office and at the grassroot levels. Through that she was able to pass on her skills to the younger girls in her care.
Much to our delight upon graduation, she decided to join our Foundation as staff. It can be said that she was truly "Home-grown" and would understand and impart the philosophies of the Foundation to the Next Generation..to continue passing it on!
Our Foundation for Life thanks all donors who have been crucial in making this happen for, not only 1, but hundreds of girls who have benefitted from our outreach.
Any comments and feedback that would enhance our efforts are greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks!
