Ukraine is one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world, which poses life threats to the majority of its civilian population, especially kids. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 124 people have been killed by explosive devices in Ukraine, including 6 children. Millions of Ukrainians now require knowledge about mines, as these skills can save lives.
On June 6, one of the largest water reservoirs in southern Ukraine, the Kakhovka Reservoir, was unleashed by the destruction of its dam. The ensuing flood has significantly increased the mine risks by floating and dispersing the explosive ordnance from the heavily mined areas to the territories that were unpolluted before.
The Ukrainian Red Cross, jointly with the authorities, raises awareness about mine risk. Now we need to intensify our work in the South of the country. Specifically, we plan to hold information sessions and workshops for children and adults on how to recognize explosive devices, develop knowledge about the types of mines and the risks they pose, and what to do in case of their discovery.
