Support the School for Hearing Impaired Students

TECHNICAL REPORT

INTRODUCTION

A school for the deaf and hard of hearing was created in Sokodé in 2006 under the name VIVENDA. It had 15 deaf and hard of hearing children including 7 girls and 8 boys and only one (1) teacher.

The school was entirely financed by the financial contribution of parents and certain NGOs such as "CAMPAIGN OF MEN" based in Kpalimé .

Due to lack of funding, VIVENDA School was closed during the 2019-2020 school year.

Following the closure, deaf and hard-of-hearing children attending the school found themselves at home, without any support from the education system. This further complicated the lives of both parents and children.

This is how a woman from Sokodé, a seamstress by profession, offered to take over the education of these children in need, whose numbers are growing. The Sokodé School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children, under the name KAMADAR (ESMK-Sokodé), was thus created for the 2020-2021 school year.

Using her own funds, this woman then rented a six-bedroom house with a courtyard and a playground to house ESMK-Sokodé. She called on the teacher from the former VIVENDA school to teach the students.

Aware of the financial difficulties faced by parents in general and those of deaf and hard of hearing children in particular, and taking into account the wish of almost all of these parents to see their children educated and trained in a specialized school, ESMK-Sokodé has opted not to ask for any contribution from parents already affected, in order to encourage the enrollment of their children. School uniforms, supplies and snacks are fully covered by the school.

Presented to the administrative, religious and customary authorities of the central region, as well as to the population through communications and meetings, the initiative to open ESMK-Sokodé was welcomed and congratulated by all stakeholders, as the need for such a school is real.

ESMK-Sokodé, the only private specialist school that supports the education of deaf and hard of hearing children, aims to become a benchmark school that could one day benefit from the support of the Togolese state through the assignment of specialist teachers.

It was in the search for solutions that the promoter of this school met the NGO CAV to request the support of these financial partners.

This project therefore falls within the framework of result 3 of the 2021 - 2025 strategic plan of the NGO CAV, entitled: "The education of young girls in rural areas and the fight against child trafficking in general and children with disabilities in particular are improved by the end of 2025".

Since 2023, with the financial support of various partners through GlobalGiving , a leading organization for fundraising, several actions have been carried out. These include:

-          Recruitment and training of two (2) additional teachers;

-          Coverage of salaries of three (3) teachers, the Director and other support staff;

-          Acquisition of teaching materials and consumables (tables, chairs, tables-benches, cupboard, chalk and specialized tools for the hearing impaired), etc.;

-          Acquisition of three (3) children’s play modules;

-          Financial support for classroom rental costs, water and electricity bills throughout the school year;

-          Acquisition of a plot of land with an area of 2 ares and 25 centiares for a school construction project.

ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT

In May 2025, the CAV NGO received funding from the COCHRAN Family through GlobalGiving . This funding enabled the start of construction of 3 classrooms, 1 office and 1 store.

The activities were carried out from June 1 ^to July 20, 2025. These include excavation, the manufacture of concrete blocks , the transport of sand and gravel, the purchase of cement and irons for the start of construction.

New funding will enable progress to be made in the construction of the classrooms in this school for the development of hearing-impaired children.

FINANCIAL REPORT

INTRODUCTION

As part of the implementation of the project " Construction of classrooms for children with disabilities in Sokodé " , the NGO CAV mobilized a significant grant from the COCHRAN Family through GlobalGiving

This report is the financial assessment of the activities carried out within the framework of the implementation of this project from May 27 to July 21 , 2025. It includes:

-          Funding received;

-          The bank journal of the NGO CAV and;

-          Budget execution.

I - FINANCING RECEIVED 

The total amount of the grant is 1,779,750 CFA francs, or US$ 3,150 ( 1 US dollar = 565 CFA francs)  .This grant is distributed as follows:

• Manufacture of parpings for an amount of 184,000 CFA francs or 326 US$ .
• transport of sand for an amount of 225,000 CFA francs or 398 US$ .
• Gravel transportfor an amount of 250,000 CFA francs or 443 US$ .
• Purchase of cement for an amount of 274,475 CFA francs or 486 US$ .
• Purchase of iron for a total cost of 490,325 CFA or 868 US$ .
• Operating costs for the NGO CAV amount to 355,950 CFA francs, or US$ 630for the financing of the project .

II - THE BANK JOURNAL 

 The total amount of expenditure incurred amounts to 1,779,750 CFA francs , or US$3,150of which :

• The cost of financing construction materials amounts to 1,423,800 CFA francs, or US$ 2,520;
• The operating costs of the NGO CAV amount to 355,950 CFA francs, or US$ 630 for the financing balance .

 The overall project completion rate is 100%.

Currently, within the framework of the implementation of this project "Supporting the school for hearing-impaired students" in the prefecture of Tchaoudjo , the NGO CAV has not been able to mobilize another grant since the last report presented in November 2024.
