It's been a sweltering summer in Tamil Nadu, and while the schools have been on break we have been hard at work in the office focusing on expanding our Tribe (psst. that includes YOU!).
Siva and Gijs jet-setted to Europe to connect with our many European supporters. Along the way they made new friends and met kind strangers. We organized events in France, Germany, and the Netherlands to try to understand the best way to communicate with our Auroville friends and former volunteers, long after they leave our office. It was Siva's first time to Europe and you can read all about his quick sejourn on our blog.
Back home, The Team buckled down and focused on selecting our first cohort for 2016. Amidst all the organizational changes, and limited selection pool we found choosing a new cohort to be a huge challenge. We also met a lot of well-meaning people who just weren't fit for social entrepreneurship. Victor (our Operations Manager) figured we could help answer this question: "What is a social entrepreneur?" in a blogpost.
Our current fellows are showing us how valuable incubation support really is, by being rockstars and hitting some milestones.
Amba, Meenakshi, and Rajiv from Equals, Centre for Promotion of Social Justice in Chennai (September 2015 Cohort) are working hard to create sustainable policy changes that empower so many Indians, and it shows. In June Meenakshi traveled all the way to Washington D.C. to represent differently abled individuals at an exchange program between the International Disability Alliance (IDA) and members of the International Disability and Development Consortium. She also conducted a ground breaking three-year study of the allocation of funds for persons with disabilities in India. Read more in their newsletter.
CHILD- I Support A Girl (September 2015 Cohort) is empowering young women in Tamil Nadu, who have HIV+ parents by giving them an education and fulfilling their basic needs. HIV+ individuals and their families are not only drowning in medical debt, but they are also discriminated against in a society that treats HIV+ individuals and their families like outsiders. CHILD pairs deserving girls with donors who sponsor the girls' holistic development. Watch their video, which really pulled our heart strings.
Also on Friday, the 22nd of July, our , CARE Society (March 2015 Cohort) in association with NABARD inaugurated Kattalai Farmers Club at Kattalai village of Villupuram District. The UnLtd Tamil Nadu team was present at the event to congratulate CARE for starting their fifth farmers club successfully. The event was headed by Prof. S. Sheeba of Kisan Vikas Kendra, also attended by regional officials from NABARD and other agriculture departments, farmers club members and their families. This was a HUGE milestone for CARE, so Congrats to Kumari and Sivalingam on a job well-done!
