Project Report | Dec 19, 2017
E2E annual report

By Danny Concha | Communications

This year at E2E, we have had several milestones.

First, we became a 501c3 organization in the United States, which has opened up new possibilities to create stronger , international connections for peacebuilding, education and environmental protection in Colombia.

Second, Recuperando Vida, a waste management and recycling project in La Comuna 8, Medellín, was nominated within the top 500 projects in all of Latin American by Premios Verdes.

Third, we have strengthened multiple public-private partnerships for long-term impact across all of our projects.

Here are some details of what happened:

Urban Gardens Project:

Over the past 12 months, we have:

  • Significantly expanded our core team.
  • Successfully integrated 10 families and 150 school children from Colegio Vida Para Todos into our Urban Gardens Network programme.
  • Overseen the cultivation and harvest of a diverse range of crops including; lettuce, celery, onions, chives, coriander, stevia, aniseed and aromatic herbs.

In November, we organise our first major fundraising event for the project. This took the form of a charity dinner hosted by local chef Pedro Fernández (alias ‘The Chef is Back’), which showcased the produce of Colegio Vida Para Todos. The success of this event helped finance the purchase of necessary products (such as natural pesticides, compost and fertiliser) which are required to take the project into its next stage.

This year also saw significant advances in our ongoing negotiations with the City of Medellín.We remain hopeful of securing permission to use the Cerro de los Valores allotment as a storage space and selling point for our network of gardeners and consumers.

Despite the expected challenges and difficulties, we remain confident about the trajectory of our project going into the New Year.

Rincón del Mar

This year has seen a lot of E2E activity in Rincon.

E2E was a constant presence in the community, mapping out the areas of the mangroves to be protected and baselining the current levels of carbon. This work was carried out with the assistance of local community leaders. Multiple clean-up efforts were also completed with a lot of plastic and other waste removed from the mangroves. With the widening of the estuary mouths completed by CARSUCRE there was a noticeable improvement in the health of the mangroves by the end of the year.

More work will need to be done with replanting mangroves that have died however a suitable site for the greenhouse has been identified and is awaiting further investment.

Within the community of Rincon, it was also a busy year. Surveys were carried out to determine the community incentives and community leaders participated in program management training in both January & July.

Work was also completed with the local waste company CORPORIMAR. This involved assisting with going door to door to houses in Rincon to improve take up of their service: this meant that less trash was going directly into the mangroves and also increased the amount of recycling that CORPORIMAR were able to on sell. General operational and business assistance was also provided to CORPORIMAR allowing for improved reporting and understanding on how to increase the service in 2018.

With the mangroves now mapped and the community leaders trained on what they need to do, all that is missing is direct investment to be able to restore and protect the mangroves ongoing.

Certificate in Project Design and Management, Impact Measurement

January 2017 saw its first rendition of El Taller para la Gestión de Impacto Social (TGIS). The objective of TGIS is to bring together a diverse array of current and aspiring social impact practitioners for a 5-8 day workshop on project design and management and impact measurement.

Participants in June and January learned methods in the project design process and collaborated amongst international and Colombian practitioners and community leaders on local projects currently in implementation.Participants finished the course with the knowledge and ability to design and manage their own projects with efficiency and expertise. Both January and June 2017 courses were great successes.

In January, 33 participants from 9  countries participated in the workshop. In June, 35 students from 4 countries participated. In both sessions, we were able to give 7 scholarships to community leaders from across Colombia.

We are currently looking for sponsorships for 3 ocmmunity leaders from RIncón del Mar, from Nuquí and Medellín to attend out January 2018 session.
