What If We Could Prevent the Harm Before It Happens?

When gender-based violence occurs, the consequences can be devastating.

Survivors may experience physical injury, emotional distress, stigma, disrupted education, and lasting challenges to their wellbeing.

Providing appropriate support to survivors is essential.

But there is another question we must ask:

What if we invested more in preventing violence before it happens?

What if young people learned early that consent matters?

What if harmful beliefs about women and girls were openly challenged?

What if communities recognized the warning signs of exploitation?

What if survivors knew where to seek confidential, appropriate assistance?

And what if more people understood that violence is never justified?

This is the change GoGreen hopes to advance.

Through Support Sexual Health Rights for Women and Girls, we aim to engage 400 women, girls, and young people affected by conflict and displacement in Benue State.

Our project will promote rights-based education, peer learning, awareness, and community dialogue to challenge attitudes that contribute to gender inequality, sexual violence, and harmful practices.

We believe prevention begins when people are informed, harmful norms are questioned, and communities take responsibility for protecting dignity and human rights.

A safer community is not only one that responds to violence. It is one that actively works to prevent it.

A Girl Is Not Someone's Property

A girl is not a possession.

She is not a bargaining tool.

She is not a solution to a family's financial difficulties.

And her childhood should never be sacrificed to circumstances beyond her control.

She is a person with rights, dignity, dreams, and a future of her own.

Yet harmful practices, including child marriage, continue to threaten the wellbeing and opportunities of girls in vulnerable communities.

Conflict and displacement can make these risks even more serious.

When families lose livelihoods and face severe economic hardship, girls may become increasingly exposed to harmful decisions, coercion, exploitation, and educational exclusion.

But poverty should never determine a girl's right to safety.

And cultural expectations should never silence her voice.

Through Support Sexual Health Rights for Women and Girls, GoGreen is working to challenge harmful norms and strengthen awareness of sexual and reproductive health and rights among 400 women, girls, and young people in Benue State.

Our approach recognizes that protecting girls requires more than speaking to girls alone.

We must engage young people, caregivers, families, and community influencers.

We must encourage respectful conversations about rights, bodily autonomy, child marriage, and gender-based violence.

We must help communities understand that protecting girls strengthens families and society.

A girl's value is not determined by marriage, motherhood, or anyone else's expectations.

Her value is inherent.

Her dignity is non-negotiable.

Her future deserves protection.

The Question She Is Afraid to Ask

Somewhere in a conflict-affected community, a young girl may have a question about her body.

A question about growing up.

A question about consent.

A question about reproductive health.

A question about something she has heard but does not fully understand.

Yet she remains silent.

Not because the question is unimportant, but because she fears embarrassment, judgment, punishment, or rejection.

What happens when young people are afraid to ask questions that affect their health and safety?

They may turn to unreliable information.

They may believe harmful myths.

They may struggle to recognize abuse or know where to seek help.

And they may enter adulthood without the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their wellbeing.

This is a challenge GoGreen wants to address.

Through Support Sexual Health Rights for Women and Girls, we aim to reach 400 women, girls, and young people affected by conflict and displacement in Benue State.

Our project will promote accurate, age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health education through peer-led learning, awareness activities, and community dialogues.

We want to create opportunities where questions can be answered respectfully, misinformation can be corrected, and harmful beliefs can be challenged.

Because no young person should have to choose between remaining uninformed and being judged for seeking knowledge.
