Protect Her Right to Learn

Picture a classroom in Benue State, where bright young girls dream of becoming doctors, teachers, and leaders. For many, that dream is interrupted far too soon. Early marriage, gender-based violence, and harmful practices like FGM force thousands of girls out of school every year, robbing them not only of an education but of their hopes and ambitions.

According to UNICEF, 43% of Nigerian women aged 20–24 were married before their 18th birthday. In Benue, these numbers are even more alarming due to ongoing conflict and poverty. Once married, a girl is far more likely to drop out of school, face early pregnancies, and be exposed to health risks—including complications that are a leading cause of death among adolescent girls in Nigeria.

The consequences are profound:

Loss of education closes the door to stable jobs, economic independence, and a voice in her community.
Early pregnancy increases the risk of medical complications and maternal mortality.
Social isolation and stigma trap girls in cycles of silence and disempowerment.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Unleash Her Potential-Every Girl Deserves a Chance

Imagine a girl in Benue State—her name could be Chidinma, Ayo, or Grace. She wakes up each day with dreams as bright as any child’s: to go to school, to play, to learn, to become someone who shapes her world. But for too many girls here, those dreams are at risk from the moment they are born.

Early marriage, gender-based violence, and female genital mutilation (FGM) steal away childhoods and futures. According to UNICEF, more than 4 in 10 young women in Nigeria are married before 18. The Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey reveals that only 3.2% of women aged 15–19 use family planning, while 14.4% have already given birth. These numbers mean lost years in school, lost health, and lost hope.

When a girl is forced into marriage or subjected to violence:

She is far more likely to drop out of school—ending her chance at a better life.
Her health is jeopardized by early pregnancy and dangerous practices like FGM.
She loses her voice in decisions about her own body, education, and future.

A Call to Action Backed by Global Evidence

Dear Esteemed Donor,

The world’s leading health authorities have sounded the alarm: The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 1 in 3 women globally—about 30%—will experience physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime. In Nigeria, the situation is dire. According to the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS, 2018), 31% of women have experienced physical violence since age 15, and 43% of women aged 20–24 were married before turning 18 (UNICEF, 2021).

These aren’t just statistics. They represent the real and urgent crisis facing women and girls in Benue State—crisis that cannot wait.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is another grave concern. According to the UNFPA, 14% of Nigerian girls aged 15–19 have already been subjected to FGM—a practice that leads to profound and lifelong physical, psychological, and emotional trauma.

UNICEF further warns that Nigeria is home to 22 million child brides, the third highest number worldwide. These child marriages are linked to higher rates of maternal mortality, school dropout, and ongoing cycles of poverty and violence.

The evidence is overwhelming:

WHO: 1 in 3 women worldwide face physical or sexual violence.
NDHS (2018): 31% of Nigerian women experience physical violence; 14% of girls 15–19 already circumcised.
UNICEF (2021): 43% of women 20–24 married before 18; 22 million Nigerian child brides.
