How Supporting One Girl Uplifts an Entire Family

When a girl in Benue State is forced into early marriage or endures violence, the pain does not end with her—it echoes through her family, especially her mother, and impacts generations to come.

Consider the story of Blessing and her daughter, Ruth. Blessing was herself a child bride, married before her 16th birthday. She never finished school, and the trauma of early marriage left scars that shaped her life. When Ruth, her eldest daughter, began to approach adolescence, Blessing feared the same fate awaited her child: the pressure to marry early, drop out of school, and face the risks of early pregnancy and gender-based violence.

This cycle is heartbreakingly common. According to UNICEF, 43% of women aged 20–24 in Nigeria were married before 18. The consequences ripple outward:

Girls face lost education, early motherhood, and health risks.
Mothers carry the pain and regret of their own lost opportunities, often feeling powerless to protect their daughters.
Families endure economic hardship as both mother and daughter are trapped by limited choices.

But hope grows when one girl is given a chance.

Imagine Benue State as a place where every girl remains in school, learns valuable skills, and grows into an empowered woman. The Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey shows that each year of secondary education reduces a girl’s risk of child marriage and increases her contributions to her community’s prosperity.

43% of young women in Nigeria are married before 18, cutting their education and opportunities short (UNICEF, 2021).

In the heart of Benue State, there is a quiet revolution beginning in the lives of women and girls who have survived unimaginable hardship. Take the story of Ngozi, who as a teenager endured the trauma of female genital mutilation (FGM)—an ordeal faced by 14% of Nigerian women aged 15–19. The pain and fear she experienced stayed with her, until she found support through a local peer group funded by caring donors like you. Today, Ngozi is not just a survivor—she is a mentor, using her experience to educate others and prevent the same fate for future generations.

Stories like Ngozi’s are a testament to how empowerment and support can transform individuals and communities. When survivors are given knowledge, skills, and a safe environment to share their voices, the ripple effect touches everyone:

Families are strengthened as survivors become advocates for change within their own homes.
Communities begin to question harmful traditions and adopt new, healthier practices.
Young girls see role models who show that a different, brighter future is possible.

The "Support Sexual Health Rights for Women and Girls" project is designed to multiply these stories of hope. With your help, we will:
