Many families still rely on unsafe streams, placing children and vulnerable households at constant risk of waterborne diseases.

The people of Ortese have endured profound loss—homes destroyed, livelihoods disrupted, and critical infrastructure lost to conflict. Yet, in the face of these immense challenges, their determination to rebuild remains unwavering. During our recent assessment, our team met parents investing in their children’s future, dedicated teachers committed to education, and community leaders striving to restore stability and hope. Their request was clear and fundamental: access to safe water.
Clean water is not a luxury; it is a necessity for health, education, dignity, and sustainable recovery. Without it, children remain vulnerable to preventable illnesses that keep them out of school and further burden families already working hard to rebuild their lives.

No Child Should Suffer Because of Water

Clean water is a fundamental human right, not a privilege. Yet for countless children in Ortese, Benue State, Nigeria, access to safe drinking water remains out of reach. Rather than simply filling a cup from a tap, these children start their days with long, exhausting walks to polluted streams and stagnant ponds. While the water they collect may relieve their thirst, it also exposes them to a relentless threat of illness.
Every sip of contaminated water jeopardizes a child’s health, education, and future. Waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid not only cause suffering and lost school days but also hinder physical growth and drain family resources. For families already struggling to recover from conflict and displacement, these preventable illnesses add yet another layer of hardship and uncertainty to daily life.
But this cycle can be broken.
