Respected Esteemed Donors,
Greetings to you from Health Education Adoption Rehabilitation Development Society (HEARDS) - India!
I hope that this report finds you in good health. It is hard to believe that the pandemic is over a year old now. While India had made progress towards flattening the curve earlier this year, it now appears that the new variant is wreaking havoc. At the time of me writing this report, there were over 260,000 confirmed new Covid cases there in the past 24-hours. Needless to say, the situation in India is dire.
We are very thrilled to share exciting news with you. Thanks to your generous support, we have been able to complete the painting and refurbishment of the classrooms for HEARDS Rehabilitation School. The classrooms were fully changed with an ambiance to accept students. We would like to take this opportunity to offer our heartfelt gratitude to each and everyone at GlobalGiving for your unprecedented generosity during such a difficult period of the COVID-19 pandemic. We do understand how it is difficult for each of us these days and how humanity has been severely suffering from this challenge. You did a heroic deed by sharing our challenges and offering your hand of help. Even though during the pandemic HEARDS continued in educating our children in our rehabilitation school shows the intense and holistic work undertaken these past months, to ensure children are not left behind due to the effects of the coronavirus. HEARDS staff team shares the activities conducted during this reporting period:
On April 20,2021 the Andhra Pradesh Government decided to shut down all the schools in the State due to a spike in COVID-19 cases. The decision to shut down schools and coaching institutes comes after announcing a lockdown from April 20 onwards to stem the unprecedented surge in the cases of Covid-19. This was an unfortunate incident that happened in the lives of our children because the children have started to improve their educational standards tremendously during this period but unfortunately; COVID-19 has taken our classes away from us. The painstaking effort taken by our teachers was overwhelming. These children belong to families who are living below the poverty line, whose parents are not able to meet even their most basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing. Unfortunately, our rehabilitation school is disturbed with Covid-19 Virus lockdown from 20th of April 2021 due to COVID-19 second wave. All the families are again struck in the construction industry without work and live in their huts with starvation.
The overall attitude of the children, as well as the community at large, has undergone a sea change since the project began. The community – the elders, in particular, had never imagined until a few months back that their children would attend a school and that their children would even read or write, thereby opening up opportunities for further education and progress in their area. In the center, the Muslim community women, who would not step out of their homes 10 years ago, now accompany their children to the center to meet the concerned teachers and clear any doubts, discuss problems, etc. Once again, on behalf of our Team, the School Administration, the beneficiary children, we would like to extend our wholehearted gratitude to everyone and each of you at GlobalGiving for your time, for your generosity, for being with us in this uneasy time, and for bestowing a very precious present upon our children - ACCESS to EDUCATION.
Thanking you,
With best wishes and fond regards,
By Mr. Kuriyakose Sajan | Chairman and Project Coordinator
