JATITUHU STUDENTS PREPARE FOR EXAMS AND COMPUTER CLASSES DESPITE BALI'S MOUNT VOLCANO ACTIVITY

As we mentioned on our November 2017 report that Jatituhu school was suspended from 22nd September due to the potential of Bali’s Mount Agung volcano erupting and were allowed to resume again on 13th November after volcano activities reduced. Ultimately, Mount Agung DID  erupt on 21st November,  followed by more eruptions in the next few days, when the government ordered the community to be evacuated again to a safer location more than 12km radius from Mount Agung crater.

However, our teachers continued to give classes to the students in various evacuation camps although it was not maximal. We also gave the students their first semester exams at the camps in mid December 2017.

On 4th January, after the eruptions stopped and volcanic activitydecreased the government finally  reduced the hazard zone to 6km from the crater that allowed the Jatituhu community to returned home and we resumed full Jatituhu school programs on 8 January 2018.

Now that ourJatituhu School has resumed normal activities, both EBPP staff and students have to work harder to catch up with the curriculum not yet covered due to their evacuation. In addition to academic lessons, they have also resumed extra curricula EMpower classes, present topics being about "Preventing Pregnancy or Abstaining". We hope that the knowledge and empowerment given in these lessons will discourage students from getting married at an early age.

For the next EMpower classes, we’ve partnered with STMIK STIKOM Indonesia, a computer& IT university based in Denpasar. Their lecturers will start on 27th February 2018 teaching our high school students professional computer skills of Word, Excel, Graphic Design and internet skills to enable them to be competitive in the jobs market and help lift their village from poverty to sustainable social and economic development. Our Grade 6 (5 students), 9 (3) & 12 (3) students however, need more intensive classes because in April & May 2018 they will sit the Government National Exams to graduate elementary, junior and senior high school respectively.

Their education in Jatituhu school is made possible through your kind donations to our crowdfunding campaigns, launched in November 2015, when you helped us raise $13,776 and achieve our target to sponsor 12 of our primary school students for 2 years, from January 2016 until December 2017. Presently in total we have 28 students at Jatituhu school. From January 2018, we are again facing difficulties as the present donors of our 16 others students are also unable to continue financial support. With your help, we can continue providing comprehensive education for all our 28 Jatituhu students.

The average cost/year for one student in 2018 is US$584. To provide education for 28 students and sustain the operating costs of our education team, transport and school facilities for all students in Jatituhu School for 2018, we need to raise US$16,352.

We, the students and the Jatituhu community would be very grateful if you candonate again to make their dream become reality.
