Support Montessori Communities in Puerto Rico
By Xavier Rivera | Social Media and Crowdfunding.
Montessori Environment
Through INE’s Montessori Project, we work with community leaders, public schools teachers and parents who have decided to resist the ongoing closure of small community schools and transform these schools into excellent Montessori education programs. In august 2019, we received eight (8) new school communities in our program. The program consists of:
a) Establish collective and participative government methodology to the public sector where teachers, school principals, families and community members together to make school decisions and are committed to those.
b) Provide Montessori—an academic project based on a proven human development science that leads to the formation of an academically well-prepared beings committed to the common good. Montessori establishes high standards, embraces diversity and develops a school peace culture.
c) Provides teacher and assistant Montessori training program, not available to teachers in PR before.
d) Establish strong parent participation methodology by which schools “enroll families” not children alone- the family is integrated into the Montessori education program through: Montessori parents education by which the science of development is shared with them, parents are the first candidates when hiring assistant teachers in the schools, and are part of the participative governance through the Parents Committees established in each school.

By Xavier Rivera | Project Leader
Instituto Nueva Escuela (INE) aims to contribute to strengthening and transforming public education in Puerto Rico by training teachers and assistants in Montessori philosophy. Currently, INE is the only existing and accredited institution that offers training and coaching in Montessori philosophy and methodology in Puerto Rico. By training teachers and assistants, INE promotes the public education and social transformation of the communities surrounding the schools. Citizens become part of a social movement that promotes excellence in education for parents and students.
As the 2018-19 academic year comes to a close so is this specific project. Having been able to secure the posotion of 194 Montessori teachers and assistants and certified them in Montessori filosophy. Mothers and fathers, members of the communities which now work in the same school where their children go to get an education. This way strengthening their respective communities.
Though the challenges we face to reconstruct and redesign our island are still present we move foward with hope. Our next step is directed toward funding our schools transformation program.

The year 2019 started with the governor signing the Law 277, which let to the historic creation of SAEM historic creation of SAEM (Auxiliary Secretariat of Montessori Education by its Spanish Acronym) in the Department of Education in Puerto Rico. This is the first place in the world to pass a law that makes Montessori education accessible for all students in the country. Our visibility has helped to reach out to other organizations and receive volunteer work in schools’ communities.
The economic recovery process of Puerto Rico will continue to challenge our mission. That is why we would like to secure the positions of our 194 teachers assistants. Many of our assistants are school’s community members, single women and heads of family. The community around our school is highly involved in every process. The assistants recruited are mostly from communities nearby. Instituto Nueva Escuela (INE) is responsible for maintaining these jobs and keeping up their training process. The assistants get trained to implement changes in the traditional curriculum areas in Math and Language.
Thank you for being part of Puerto Rico’s education transformation!
