Instituto Nueva Escuela (INE) aims to contribute to strengthening and transforming public education in Puerto Rico by training teachers and assistants in Montessori philosophy. Currently, INE is the only existing and accredited institution that offers training and coaching in Montessori philosophy and methodology in Puerto Rico. By training teachers and assistants, INE promotes the public education and social transformation of the communities surrounding the schools.  Citizens become part of a social movement that promotes excellence in education for parents and students.

The year 2019 started with the governor signing the Law 277, which let to the historic creation of SAEM historic creation of SAEM (Auxiliary Secretariat of Montessori Education by its Spanish Acronym) in the Department of Education in Puerto Rico.  This is the first place in the world to pass a law that makes Montessori education accessible for all students in the country.  Our visibility has helped to reach out to other organizations and receive volunteer work in schools’ communities.

The economic recovery process of Puerto Rico will continue to challenge our mission. That is why we would like to secure the positions of our 194 teachers assistants.  Many of our assistants are school’s community members, single women and heads of family. The community around our school is highly involved in every process. The assistants recruited are mostly from communities nearby. Instituto Nueva Escuela (INE) is responsible for maintaining these jobs and keeping up their training process. The assistants get trained to implement changes in the traditional curriculum areas in Math and Language.

Thank you for being part of Puerto Rico’s education transformation!

School by school, we aim to build stronger communities.

At this time of the year, concluding a 2018 full of challenges, INE is pleased to inform that we have achieved to maintain all of our 194 Montessori Guides' Assistants in their classrooms during all year long.  This year 2018 was very difficult by the passage of the Hurricane Maria though Puerto Rico, but we did it with your help and the effort of all those communities and persones comitted with our cause.

We made it through 2018, but we can't lower the guard as the long-term repercussions on the government and the ecnomy of Puerto Rico will continue affecting us and theatening our mission.

At this time INE has mantain all of the Montessori Guides' Assistant on their positions. They have been a key at this moment of crisis.

After Hurricane Maria it arose a communitarian organization through the Montessori Guides' Assistants to lift up an inventory of the students, their families and their immediate needs. The Montessori Guide Assistants lead the first communitarian response; they collaborate at the refugees, help to clean the schools, distributed supplies and supported the needs from the served families. The assistants give emotional support at each one of the schools that served as communitarian center, the fundamental help was attend the students and giving the caregivers the opportunity to look for help and solve home situations. The principal goal was back to normal as soon as possible, the kids through the school, achieved it.

Greysha Algarín, resident from Península de Cantera community have two kids and lost their home roof and all their belongings. As well as the scholar community (director, assistants and teachers) and Familiar House Program collaborate with this family and managed to get clothes for the kids, food hygiene articles as well as water filter and home furniture. Familiar House received the kids with the emotional help services they offered. All this happened thanks to the effort our Assistants in identifying the most pressing needs of the communities.
