Summary

With this project it becomes a reality that children and young people in Puerto Rico can have a public Montessori education, which is known for being one that educates for peace. Currently there are 60 public Montessori schools located in low income areas and violent environments, where 82% of the participants live below the poverty level and as time goes by that percentage increases. It is through public Montessori education that Instituto Nueva Escuela manages to bring peace to communities.

Challenge

Today, violence affects countries, communities, and families worldwide. While inequality is often cited as a key contributor to violence, it is not the sole cause; it can lead to frustration and violent behavior. In Puerto Rico, 82% of students in public Montessori schools live below the poverty line, highlighting the need for accessible peace-oriented education. Montessori programs are vital for fostering understanding and reducing violence in these communities.

Solution

Maria Montessori viewed peace as a lifestyle developed from childhood through education. The mission is to cultivate peace in Puerto Rico by establishing academically excellent schools that promote cultures of peace. This is achieved through a collective approach to rebuild the social fabric of schools and the implementation of Montessori methods grounded in human development science. The goal is to create educational environments that optimally serve children and youth, fostering understanding.

Long-Term Impact

Montessori Educating for Peace fosters peaceful communities through education centered on collaboration, respect, and empathy. At Instituto Nueva Escuela, 16,000 students across 60 Montessori schools in 31 municipalities are learning to become thoughtful, engaged citizens. By teaching conflict resolution and social responsibility, we are cultivating a generation committed to building peaceful, thriving societies and a better present and future for Puerto Rico.
