Onwards and Upwards!
In 2023 we broke our goal of 500 library users for the first time in the history of the Limitless Knowledge Community Library! Breny was one such new user last year. The 9-year-old sister of a Limitless Horizons Ixil middle school student, she started attending the library in December and quickly started attending every day in the afternoon after her half-day of public school classes. Plus, she has started bringing her 5 -year-old brother, who is now learning to read well ahead of his peers who will likely not be fluent readers until the age of seven or eight.
While Breny knows how to read, she has advanced beyond others in her grade in math by participating in math class at the library, one of several extra-curricular classes offered to supplement students’ half-day of public school where they only get 35 minutes of instruction per subject a day.
New this year: The Monthly Book Corner
In March, the Limitless Knowledge Community Library implemented a new Rincón de Libros (Book Corner). Each month, the library team selects a topic that they’d like readers like Breny to explore through books, and creates decorations that highlight important aspects of the monthly theme. April’s theme is ‘Eco-conscious Explorers,’ and offers library users the opportunity to dive into conservation, the environment, and sustainable ways of living.
School Library Extension
Since the Limitless Knowledge Community Library is a 20-minute uphill walk from Colegio Horizontes, this year we have implemented a small rotating library of 70 books at the school, which are traded out with the library each month to facilitate library lending by Colegio Horizontes students. This new library shelf has been well received by both teachers and students alike.
We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supports and contributes to the Limitless Knowledge Community Library. Your commitment helps us empower young minds like Breny's and create a brighter future for the Chajul community.
