Around the world, COVID19 has affected the operations of businesses and organisations. Throughout 2020, we somehow managed to keep Tin Roof Foundation going and with your support, we served our nonprofit partners and helped them to learn, share and grow together. From organizing online training to holding brainstorming sessions and joint fundraisers, we did what we could to help them navigate the challenges they faced.
Unfortunately, we have been unable to source the funding to keep this work going in 2021. Our team has been working in a voluntary capacity where we can but we are not operating as usual and it looks unlikely that we will be able to resume that in the near future. As a result, we are deactivating this project on GlobalGiving.
We would like to thank you for supporting Tin Roof Foundation in 2020 and believing in the work we were doing. Our hope is that the network we started will continue to work together and we will plug in where we can.
One of the key roles Tin Roof Foundation plays is making connections, especially where that can lead to increased impact for local communities. Over the past couple of months, we’ve been delighted to have been able to make two such connections for our nonprofit partners.
One area in which our partners wanted support was training on Grant Writing. We contacted the East African Philanthropy Network who have a goal of building the capacity of nonprofit organisations. They brought in the Kenya Association of Fundraising Professionals and we were able to host a virtual workshop for our members plus additional nonprofits.
Another challenge that our partners face is Measuring Impact. Using a contact we met at a prior year GivingTuesday conference, we were able to bring in YETU Initiative by Aga Khan Foundation to host a one hour virtual discussion as part of our series of calls to Learn, Share and Grow. After being given a lot of practical tips and information, participants were able to ask specific questions about things their organisations were struggling with when it comes to monitoring and evaluation. The feedback we got was that this has been one of the best sessions and we look forward to hosting further training on this topic.
We’re also excited to have been able to develop a fundraising event that our nonprofit partners can use as part of their GivingTuesday campaign. On 1st of December, alongside 7 partners, we are hosting a 5km Virtual Run that people anywhere in the world can join. Each organisation can add its own twist and market it but we hope that by working together the appeal can reach a wider audience. Our role is to handle the administration of runners and provide as much support as we can for participating organisations.
GlobalGiving has $1 million of matching funds to give away on 1st December. We know 2020 has been a really tough year but if you would be able to make a small contribution to our work on that day, we would be grateful for your support.

In some ways, it feels like the world as we knew it stopped existing when COVID19 made an unexpected appearance in our lives. New ways of working had to be found, priorities changed, basic things like going to buy food became a much more complicated task.
For our nonprofit partners, their work changed almost overnight. Schools closed, people were unable to go to work, sporting activities were suspended and everyone was thrown into confusion. That didn't last long though! We quickly saw each organisation find new ways to support the local community, keeping people safe through handwashing stations and masks, providing food to families who needed support, looking for alternative ways to educate children who were out of school.
At Tin Roof Foundation, we also had to adapt. With the team working from home, we started online calls for our partners in place of the monthly meetings we would usually hold. The frequency also increased with meetings happening every two weeks so that members could share what they were doing, inspire and advise others, brainstorm solutions to challenges they were facing and have a sense that they were not alone in their work.
As well as general discussions, we also facilitated a session on Mental Health Awareness with a consultant psychologist providing essential tips for the organisations to use for both their staff and the people they work with. Other topics covered have included advice on Team Leadership, Volunteers and Partnerships. At the end of each session, everyone has gone away with something to try or to think about how to implement within their organisation.
On top of this, we have also hosted subsidised capacity building training workshops on Crowdfunding and working with children with special needs.
Thanks to your support, we have been able to continue to achieve our goal to help non-profits Learn, Share and Grow despite the extreme challenges they have been facing.
On behalf of them and us.....THANK YOU!
