Every week, hundreds of School on Wheels volunteer tutors give hope, educational assistance and support to children experiencing homelessness in Southern California.
There are over 290,000 children without a home in California. Mothers and children experiencing homelessness are now the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population, and the percentage of kids without a home in the U.S. is greater today than at any point since the Great Depression. On average, 4-6 months of academic progress is lost with every school change and as a result, children experiencing homelessness are 9 times more likely to repeat a grade.
We believe that education is the way out of poverty. We shrink the gaps in the education of students experiencing homelessness and provide them with the highest education possible so they can overcome the statistics that would condemn them to a life of poverty.
We will touch the educational lives of over 6,500 children experiencing homelessness every year, allowing them to reduce the gaps in their education, understand the importance of learning and thereby become more productive members of society.
