Children all over the world are growing up without the care, protection and guidance they need. SOS Children's Villages is there, working with children, young people and families to tackle this global issue on a local level. We work to keep families together, provide alternative care when needed, support young people on their path to independence, and advocate for the rights of children. Together with donors, partners, communities, and governments, we lay the foundations for a brighter future.
After eight years, Brazil has just returned to the United Nations (UN) Hunger Map. More than 61 million Brazilians live in a situation of some type of food insecurity. Hunger doubled in families with children under 10 years of age, from 9.4% in 2020 to 18.1% in 2022. According to data from the latest VIGISAN , 60% of households with at least one child or teenager live to suffer from some form of food insecurity - this number rises to 82.5% in households with 3 or more children and teenagers.
In our Family Strengthening projects in 5 cities in Rio Grande do Sul, we identified 155 families, with an accentuated additional risk of food insecurity. Mostly families in extreme poverty with an average of 3 children each. We started this campaign to provide emergency support through the supply of a Food Card for the purchase of food, hygiene and cleaning products for 155 families in Rio Grande do Sul.
Food support helps keep the family together and promotes the healthy development of children and adolescents, guaranteeing fundamental rights essential to childhood. It is known that child malnutrition has irreparable consequences for physical and mental development, such as deficiencies in learning due to a delay in intelligence, and problems in bone calcification and in its vital functions, among others. This is hard work and is only possible through the support of donors and partners.
