“I’m the first Spanish speaker on the DVRM team, so I get to be a bridge to help the Latine community get addiction and domestic violence services simultaneously.
I wish everyone had access to our program. I recently helped a survivor connect with the recovery community, move from sober living to her own apartment, apply for a business license (which was just approved!), and get custody of her children. She and her kids are thriving.
Having support means she finally gets to decide what her family’s life looks like.
There are so many challenges, though. Funding is being cut for community resources, especially for Latines, so it’s taking a lot longer to help folks work towards stability and recovery. And fewer housing resources mean survivors are more likely to have to stay with an abuser or be homeless. That all makes recovery harder.
Through all of it, I’m proud to be a bridge for survivors as they figure out their own recovery process – it’s progress, not perfection.”
