Supporting teens in the wake of dating violence

By JW + AI | Development Staff

You have generously supported our emergency shelter, but did you know that Raphael House also helps prevent future violence through prevention education? For more than 12 years, Raphael House has been teaching students about healthy relationships in local schools. Now we're expanding our Prevention Education services beyond the clasroom, providing confidential advocacy at two local schools. This pilot is unprecedented, and is currently the only public school-approved program in the US providing this kind of on-site support to youth.

One in three teens will experience some form of abuse, but many young people are afraid to ask for help and don't know what resources are available. That's where Healthy Relationship Advocates come in! They work one-on-one with youth, while maintaining their safety and confidentiality.

Because school staff are mandatory reporters, this service isn't otherwise available to students. And that can prevent teens from getting the help they need (and deserve) in the wake of domestic and sexual violence. Advocates are also working school-wide to create a culture that promotes safe, equitable, and healthy relationships.

We believe that all students deserve safe and non-judgmental support, as well as confidentiality and control over the information they share. That's why it's such an honor to embark on this groundbreaking project with our partners Volunteers of America Oregon Home Free, the Oregon School-Based Health Alliance, and Portland Public Schools.

From survivors in our shelter, to survivors in local schools, your gifts make a difference. Thank you!
